Day 20 - Friday, May 19, 2023
Stayed at a rest stop outside of Grainfield, Kansas last night. It had a nice loop with picnic tables and garbage cans where I could parallel park. No one bothered us. This was my view when I woke up this morning.
I decided to do a little site-seeing and went and saw Monument Rocks Chalk Pyramids in Lewis, Kansas. It's one of the "8 Wonders of Kansas". The formations are up to 70 ft. The carbonate deposits were laid down during the Cretaceous Period (about 80 million years ago). Dirt roads (some muddy and washboard due to the recent rains) were not too bad getting out there.
Made it into Colorado and it is really smoky here. Apparently, there are 100+ fires in Alberta, Canada and the smoke is coming down into the northwestern US states. Bali found some grass and a couple of strange looking and sounding birds. Not sure what they were.
I found a place for us to stay tonight. Hoping the smoke clears some so I can do some Colorado viewing. They are saying the smoke is worse at the higher elevations and there is more rain coming all next week, so I may just head up to Idaho sooner than planned. We'll see...
